Ph.D. Student in Philosophy
Professional Bio
Ben Decarie-Daigneault works at the intersection of 20th century continental philosophy (esp. phenomenology and French poststructuralism) and contemporary environmental philosophy. His dissertation, Transcendental Geology: The Genesis of Time in Nature After Phenomenology, argues that the phenomenological temporality of subjectivity is involved in a dynamic relation of codetermination with the temporality of nature. This project builds on the works of Merleau-Ponty and Deleuze to demonstrate that subjectivity is always involved in a dialogue with traces of nature’s deep past that manifest themselves both in organic bodies and in inorganic beings. His next research project will explore the ethical and political consequences of this ontology of nature by putting it in dialogue with discourses from the fields of care ethics, ecofeminism, environmental justice, and ontological anthropology. Ben's work has been published in academic journals such as Continental Philosophy Review, Symposium, Chiasmi International, Philosophiques, and Philosophy and Social Criticism.
