Congratulations to Christopher Moore! Christopher has been selected as a Resident Scholar at the Penn State Humanities Institute for Fall 2024

Christopher’s project during his HI residency is to complete his monograph, The Thinkery: Ideas and Intellectuals in the Age of Socrates, under contract with Harvard University Press. The book will tell a new synthetic history of intellectual culture in fifth-century BCE Greece, a period in which the idea of the ‘idea’ arose. Christopher describes the complex networks of a “public intellectual sphere” and argues for an ambitious thesis about the sociology of knowledge. The title itself (“The Thinkery”) is a translation of Aristophanes’ phrontisterion, “house of thinkers,” in The Clouds.
