The University of Memphis Philosophy Department Hosts Conference on Hortense Spillers

Partially organized by Professor Kris Sealey, the Philosophy Department is hosting a conference on Hortense J. Spillers, April 3–4, 2026. This conference is a Southern Journal of Philosophy Workshop. Spillers herself is the Honorary Speaker; the Keynote is Professor Margo Natalie Crawford (University of Pennsylvania). From our Department, Professor Jasmine Wallace and doctoral student Natalie Lobach will speak. Additional workshop speakers include Justin Clardy (Santa Clara University), Julianne Mann (University of North Dakota), Michael Eng (Appalachian State University), Kevin Morris (UMass Amherst), Monaye Johnson (Brown University), Colin Stragar-Rice (Cornell University) Kimberly Lamm (Duke University), Anwar Uhuru (Wayne State University).

About the Workshop:

The Southern Journal of Philosophy Workshop alms to bring cutting-eage thinking to botn classical and contemporary topics, with an eye toward encouraging bold new directions in philosophical thought.

This annual event is held in conjunction with the VotM and Wiley Publishing. Each year, the main proceedings are published in the final issue of the corresponding volume of the journal.

This year’s speakers will honor Hortense J. Spillers (’64), whose scholarship has singularly advanced the fields of American literary criticism, cultural studies, black feminism and philosophies of race. For more information, contact Michael J. Monahan at mjmnahan@memphis.edu.
