Mitchem Dissertation Fellowship
The Arnold L. Mitchem Dissertation Fellowship Program is intended to increase the presence of underrepresented ethnic groups in the professoriate by supporting doctoral candidates in completing the final academic requirement, the dissertation.

Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowships for Minorities
These awards are made to individuals who have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Fellowships are granted to individuals with membership in one or more of groups whose under-representation in the American professoriate has been severe and longstanding.

Josephine De Kármán Fellowship Trust
For ABD candidates; applicants should have manifested exceptional ability and serious purpose. Special consideration will be given to applicants in the Humanities and to graduate students who will have completed their dissertations by the end of calendar 2006.

German Academic Exchange (DAAD) Summer Language Grant
Scholarships are awarded to graduate students in all fields of study except English, German, or any other modern language or literature. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their academic record and statements of projected academic and professional future. Applicants must have completed three semesters of college German or have achieved an equivalent level of language proficiency.

Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Dissertation Fellowship
The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation (HFG) welcomes proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that promise to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence, aggression, and dominance. Highest priority is given to research that can increase understanding and amelioration of urgent problems of violence, aggression, and dominance in the modern world.

German Academic Exchange (DAAD) Short-Term Grants
Applicants are requested to have a well-defined study or research project that makes a stay in Germany essential. Preference will be given to applicants who have been invited by a faculty member at a German university to study or do research in a particular university department. Applicants in the humanities and social sciences should have a good command of German.

Fulbright Program
Doctoral-degree candidates must demonstrate capacity for independent study or research, together with a general knowledge of the history, culture, and current events of the countries to which they are applying. Applicants should demonstrate the dynamism and flexibility necessary for active involvement in the host culture.

Jacob Javits Fellowship Program
Graduate students who have not yet completed their first year of graduate study and who intend to pursue a doctoral degree may apply. Social Science Research Council International Research Fellowship
The International Dissertation Field Research Fellowship program provides support for social scientists and humanists conducting dissertation field research in all areas and regions of the world. Up to fifty fellowships will be awarded in the year 2006. The program is administered by the Social Science Research Council in partnership with the American Council of Learned Societies. Funds are provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowship
American Fellowships support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence, teaching experience, and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research.

School of American Research Weatherhead Fellowships
Six Resident Scholar Fellowships are awarded each year to six scholars (ABD minimum) who have completed their research and analysis and who need time to think and write about topics important to the understanding of humankind. Resident scholars may approach their research from the perspective of anthropology or from anthropologically informed perspectives in such fields as history, sociology, art, law, and philosophy. Both humanistically and scientifically oriented scholars are encouraged to apply.

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Fellowship
The International Dissertation Field Research Fellowships, funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This program provides support for social scientists and humanists to conduct dissertation field research in all areas and regions of the world. It is open to full-time graduate students, regardless of citizenship, enrolled in doctoral programs in the United States.

Crawford Family Fellowship in Ethical Inquiry
Applicants must exhibit academic excellence and the thesis must involve work that can be broadly construed to fall under the umbrella of "ethical inquiry." Previous fellows have written on sentencing guidelines, the reproductive care and advice women received in the 19th century, various aspects of the conduct of war, and so forth.

The Humanities Initiative Dissertation Semester Release
ABDs are eligible if they belong to a humanities discipline, have had their dissertation proposals approved, have not already received a comparable dissertation release in the past, and are being supported by graduate assistantships or their equivalent; release is for one semester.

Superior Teaching and Research (STAR) Award
