Mentorship Program and Advising
Until students select a dissertation director, who serves as the primary faculty advisor for advanced students, all students work closely with a faculty mentor and the Director of Graduate Studies who are available for consultation about course selection and other program matters. All faculty are involved in this mentoring program and each faculty member typically has two to three students who they mentor at any given time. Mentors and the Director of Graduate Studies are responsible for reviewing student progress through the program until the dissertation adviser is chosen.
Specifically, the mentor will meet with the student at least once a semester to:
- Assist students in choice of courses;
- Assist in the preparation for candidacy examinations;
- Ensure timely completion of all program requirements;
- Guide students in teaching duties;
- Evaluate student progress annually.
